The Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District Police Command has temporarily stopped the firing of muskets and guns during funerals, celebrations and other public events in Bunkpurugu Township.
The Police announced the decision in a letter dated August 11, 2026, signed by the District Police Commander, ASP Emmanuel Kofi Sintim. The directive will stay in effect until further notice.
The Command explained that the suspension is due to concerns about public safety, accidental injuries, possible loss of lives and the current security situation in the township.
The Police recognised that musketry is part of the cultural traditions of the people and has been used during funerals, celebrations and other important occasions. However, it said residents must exercise caution because of the security situation.
The Command has therefore directed that all funeral musketry be stopped until further notice. Chiefs, elders, families and residents have been asked to follow the directive.
The Police also warned that anyone who ignores the order and is caught possessing or firing a gun could face arrest and prosecution.
Traditional leaders, assembly members, community leaders and residents have been encouraged to support the decision. The Police said cooperation from the community will help protect lives, maintain peace and prevent incidents during public gatherings.
The directive has also been communicated to Lom FM. The Police called on the media and community leaders to help educate residents about the temporary suspension.
The Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District Police Command has stressed that the ban on funeral musketry will remain in place until further notice.
