The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced a nationwide demonstration on Thursday, August 6, 2026, accusing the government of weakening Ghana’s democratic institutions.
The protest, themed “Democracy Under Attack,” will begin at 6:00 a.m. at the Supreme Court and end at Jubilee House. The party is also promoting the demonstration online with the hashtags Democracy Under Attack, Save Ghana Now and Say No To State Capture.
Speaking at a press conference, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye said the party would join other political parties, civil society organisations, professional bodies, student groups, youth groups and other citizens for the protest.
“The time for silence is over. The New Patriotic Party thereby serves notice that on the 6th of August, in collaboration with other political parties, civil society organisations, professional bodies, student movements, youth movements and all well-meaning citizens, we shall embark on a massive demonstration to defend our democracy,” he said.
He added that although the first protest will be held in Accra, similar demonstrations will take place in other parts of the country at later dates.
NPP communications team member and spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, said the protest is in response to what he described as attempts by the government to silence opposing views.
“Try as you may, you can never suppress the will of the people,” he said in a Facebook post.
According to Aboagye, issues behind the planned protest include the arrests of opposition figures and critics, charges over alleged insults, the detention of TikTok users and journalists, and what he described as the misuse of bail conditions.
He also accused the Executive of becoming too close to the Judiciary, saying it poses a threat to Ghana’s democracy.
The planned demonstration comes at a time of heightened political tension, with the NPP saying it is aimed at defending civil liberties, the rule of law and accountability.
The government has, however, denied targeting political opponents, insisting that arrests and prosecutions follow due process and that the security agencies and the Judiciary operate independently.
