The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved a donation of US$250,000, about GH¢3 million, to support victims of the recent floods in Ghana.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the donation in a Facebook post after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received official notice from ECOWAS.
“I wish to announce, in the spirit of transparency and accountability, that the Foreign Ministry has just been notified by ECOWAS that they have decided to donate US$250,000.00 (about GH¢3 million) to Ghana for victims of the recent devastating floods,” he said.
Mr Ablakwa assured the public that the full amount would be transferred to the appropriate authorities as soon as the Ministry receives the funds to support relief efforts for affected communities.
He also thanked ECOWAS for the support, describing the donation as a sign of solidarity and African compassion.
“The Government of Ghana conveys boundless appreciation to ECOWAS for their solidarity and true African compassion,” he added.
The donation comes after floods affected several communities across the country, leaving many people displaced, destroying homes and property, and increasing the need for humanitarian support.
The ECOWAS support is expected to help ongoing relief and recovery efforts for the flood victims.
