Highlife musician Ofori Amponsah has urged musicians to pay greater attention to their spiritual lives, saying some struggles and destructive behaviours can be linked to weaknesses in a person’s spiritual foundation.
According to him, spiritual setbacks can sometimes be seen when things do not go as planned and people begin to feel helpless or overwhelmed by their circumstances.
Ofori Amponsah said such difficult moments can also remind people of God’s supremacy and power, and should encourage them to reflect on their spiritual lives instead of allowing challenges to completely derail them.
He explained that people who are not spiritually grounded may find it difficult to deal with such situations and could turn to substances such as alcohol and cigarettes as a way of coping.
He noted, however, that substance use may not always be the main problem, but could instead be a sign of deeper issues such as depression, disappointment or frustration.
Ofori Amponsah made the comments while discussing the spiritual side of musicians. He said artists need to recognise that they have a calling and should understand the purpose behind their work.
He also disagreed with the practice of separating music into “secular” and religious categories, insisting that “music is music”. According to him, musicians can maintain a strong spiritual foundation regardless of the type of music they perform.
He said having a strong spiritual foundation is especially important for musicians because of the pressures and uncertainties that come with the profession.
Ofori Amponsah therefore encouraged musicians to remain grounded in their faith and pay more attention to their spiritual lives as they deal with the challenges of their careers.
