Ezri Konsa has expressed his pride at joining Arsenal, describing the Premier League champions as “one of the best teams in the world” after completing his £51m move from Aston Villa.
The 28-year-old England defender has signed a four-year contract with Arsenal, with an option to extend his stay for another year.
After weeks of negotiations, Arsenal and Villa reached an agreement on Wednesday, with the deal potentially rising by a further £4m through add-ons.
“It’s a privilege to be here and can’t wait to get started,” Konsa said.
“I want to keep winning, I’m hungry to win and that’s what I’m here for.
“It’s a proud moment for me and my family to play for one of the best teams in the world.”
Arsenal had been in talks with Villa over Konsa for several weeks, but the two clubs initially disagreed over his valuation.
Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarrell Quansah, who played alongside Konsa for England at this summer’s World Cup, was also considered before Arsenal reached an agreement for Konsa.
Konsa joined Villa from Brentford in July 2019 and made 286 appearances for the club.
He helped Villa win the Europa League in May, their first major trophy since 1982.
Last season, Konsa scored two goals and provided one assist in 48 appearances as Villa finished fourth in the Premier League and secured Champions League football.
He also played in every match for England at the World Cup as Thomas Tuchel’s side reached the semi-finals, where they lost to Argentina before beating France in the bronze medal match.
Following the tournament, Villa manager Unai Emery gave Konsa four weeks off, meaning he did not feature in any of the club’s pre-season matches, including their 2-1 defeat to Paris St-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta praised Konsa’s qualities and versatility.
“Ezri is a defender of high quality, whose athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence have established him as one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers,” Berta said.
He added that Konsa’s ability to play both centre-back and right-back would provide valuable versatility to Arsenal’s squad as the club continues its push for major trophies.
