Fire damages late Murtala Mohammed’s family home in Tamale, two children rescued

Fire has destroyed part of the family home of the late Tamale Central MP, Murtala Mohammed, in Tamale, damaging nine of the 17 rooms in the house.

The fire broke out on Wednesday, August 5, prompting a quick response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO I) Hudu Baba, said the Service received a distress call at 3:29 p.m., with firefighters arriving at the scene just eight minutes later at 3:37 p.m.

According to him, firefighters rescued two schoolchildren who were trapped in one of the rooms before stepping up efforts to bring the fire under control.

The fire was later contained, preventing it from spreading to the remaining parts of the house and causing more damage.

ADO I Hudu Baba said investigations have begun to determine the cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage.

No injuries or deaths were recorded in the incident.

Murtala Mohammed was among the eight people who died in the military helicopter crash in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025.
