Abronye Worked Hard for His Re-election – Acting NPP Chairman

The Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Danquah Smith Butey, says Kwame Baffoe Abronye’s re-election as Bono Regional Chairman was not surprising because the incumbent worked hard to retain his position.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem after the NPP’s regional executive elections, Mr Butey acknowledged that Abronye had faced criticism over some of his comments and conduct.

According to him, some party members had previously called for Abronye’s removal over statements and behaviour they considered to be against the party.

However, Mr Butey said the election was a contest and Abronye managed to win the confidence of the delegates through his work in the region.

“Abronye’s reelection is not surprising. It was a contest and for him, he really worked hard. But the only problem people had was his utterances and certain behaviour they considered anti-party, and they were calling for his dismissal,” he stated.

Mr Butey said Abronye’s victory shows that the delegates had the final say in deciding who should lead the party at the regional level.

Abronye, popularly known as Abronye DC, retained the Bono Regional chairmanship in the election held on Saturday, August 15.

He polled 201 votes to defeat Yaw Afful, who received 44 votes, and Joseph Mensah, who secured 31 votes.

His victory gives him another mandate to lead the NPP’s regional structures as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.

Mr Butey also said the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections should serve as a lesson to party members, including regional leaders.

“The loss of the 2024 election was a wind of change that hit everyone, and he was no exception,” he noted.

He described the regional elections as generally successful and said the party was ready to work with all the newly elected executives.

“All over, the election went well, and we’re ready to work with all the executives elected because the delegates have spoken.”

The comments come as the NPP continues its reorganisation at the regional level ahead of the 2028 general elections.
