The Tanoso Police Command has arrested two people over their alleged involvement in or cooperation with illegal mining activities in the Tanoso area of the Ahafo Region.
The two suspects have been identified as Nana Amoako Atta, popularly known as Aseda Ben and the Ankobeahene of the Tanoso Traditional Council, and Alhassan Adamu, who is identified as the Afrisipa Krom Youth Chairman.
Their arrest is linked to allegations of illegal mining activities at Adengo/Ponwaakrom and areas connected to companies accused of contributing to the destruction of farmlands, forests and water bodies.
During the operation, the police also seized a Kia vehicle with registration number BA-841-14. The vehicle was allegedly carrying items believed to be connected to illegal mining activities.
The arrests come amid growing concerns about the impact of galamsey on the environment in the Tanoso area.
The activities have raised concerns over the destruction of farmlands and forests as well as the pollution of water bodies.
The development is also expected to bring attention to the role of individuals and groups within communities in illegal mining activities.
The police are expected to continue investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged activities and determine whether the suspects will be charged.
The case comes at a time when traditional authorities and residents in the Tano North Municipality have called for stronger action against illegal mining.
Residents have raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of the River Tano and other natural resources in the area.
The police have urged the public to support efforts to fight illegal mining by providing information that could assist authorities.
