Ghanaian hiplife star Patapaa has expressed deep disappointment over what he sees as a lack of national backing during the height of his worldwide hit, “One Corner.”
Appearing as a guest on a UTV cooking show, the lively performer said Ghana missed a major chance to elevate its music industry across Africa because many failed to see the song’s international potential.
Patapaa noted that although “One Corner” spread far beyond Ghana, the industry and key stakeholders did not unite to help him push the momentum further.
He claimed that some Nigerian artists have since borrowed elements of the song’s rhythm and blended them into their modern highlife sound — a trend he believes could have been a breakthrough moment for Ghana.
He also criticised the current trend of songs going viral on TikTok but fading quickly, saying it shows a growing lack of respect for originality in today’s music scene.
Patapaa argued that although digital trends create quick buzz, they do not build long-term influence.
He added that he proudly wore the Ghanaian flag during his international performances as a way of promoting the country on global stages.
However, he said his patriotic gesture was often misunderstood, with some people assuming he was simply being dramatic.
Patapaa insists that if his creativity and efforts had been properly recognised and supported locally, Ghana would currently enjoy a stronger musical presence on the African continent.
