Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is seeking to become the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of still holding a grudge over his role in the 2016 elections and using it to work against his leadership ambitions.
Speaking to party supporters in the Okaikwei South Constituency, Dr. Bawumia said members of the NDC often react with anger and insults whenever his name comes up. He believes this reaction stems from the impact he made during the 2016 campaign, which he says clearly unsettled the opposition.
Dr. Bawumia said the 2016 campaign was tough and highly charged, which he believes is why the NDC still holds issues with him. He made it clear, however, that the criticism does not bother him.
He also claimed that the NDC is trying to interfere in the NPP’s upcoming flagbearer race by pushing delegates to support someone else instead of him.
“Did you know the NDC would rather see you vote for another person and not me?” he asked the crowd. “Why should another party decide who leads your party? I don’t think the people of Okaikwei South will allow that to happen.”
