Asante Kotoko crash out of the CAF Confederation Cup following a heavy aggregate loss to Wydad AC

Asante Kotoko’s journey in the CAF Confederation Cup has come to a disappointing end after suffering a 6–1 aggregate defeat to Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Athletic Club.

The Porcupine Warriors entered the decisive second leg at Morocco’s Mohammed V Stadium trailing 1–0 from last Sunday’s first-leg loss at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Despite an early setback when Hamza Hannouri put Wydad ahead in the opening minute, Kotoko found a brief lifeline through Samba O’Neil, who equalised in the 19th minute. However, Wydad quickly reclaimed control as Burkinabe forward Stephane Aziz Ki restored their lead in the 26th minute, sending the hosts into halftime with a 2–1 advantage.

After the break, Wydad completely dominated proceedings. South African international Thembinkosi Lorch extended the lead in the 54th minute, before Oussama Zemraoui and Mohamed Bouchouari sealed a comprehensive 5–1 win in the dying minutes.

The result eliminates Asante Kotoko from the CAF Confederation Cup’s preliminary round, while Wydad AC progresses to the group stage, where they will discover their opponents on Monday, November 3, 2025.
