Wontumi’s Team Picks NPP National Chairman Nomination Forms Despite His Incarceration

The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has picked up nomination forms on his behalf as he continues his bid for the party’s top position.

In a statement, the campaign team said the forms were picked up to complete the nomination process and thanked supporters for their continued support.

“The Wontumi Campaign Team has today successfully picked up the nomination forms on behalf of Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi),” the team said.

The team added that the move was to formally complete the nomination process on behalf of Chairman Wontumi.

The development was also confirmed by the campaign team’s Communications Director, Ewuradwoa Coleman.

“Yes indeed, the campaign team has picked up forms on behalf of Chairman Wontumi. We are continuing his bid in the National Chairmanship race,” she told Joy News.

The move comes while Mr Boasiako remains in prison and is challenging his conviction and sentence.

His lawyers have filed a bail application pending the determination of his appeal.

Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after an Accra High Court convicted him over illegal mining-related offences at the Samreboi concession in the Western Region.

Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay found him guilty of offences including assigning mineral rights without the required ministerial approval and facilitating unlicensed mining operations.

The sentences on the different counts are running concurrently, resulting in an effective 20-year prison term.

Despite his current situation, his campaign team says it remains committed to his bid for the NPP National Chairmanship.
