Ghanaian reggae-dancehall musician Ras Kuuku has ruled out entering politics, saying the level of hatred and hostility in the political space does not appeal to him.
Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime, Ras Kuuku explained that he has no interest in seeking political office because of the way politicians attack and criticise one another.
According to him, politics often comes with personal attacks, character smears and propaganda, which he finds unattractive.
He said political opponents can turn against each other despite coming from the same communities and even attending the same churches.
“I don’t think there’s anybody who has sat on TV or something and dissed Raskuku. But when it comes to politics, you know there’s hatred. People hate each other too much, and later you see them go to church,” he said.
Ras Kuuku specifically mentioned the rivalry between Ghana’s two major political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He noted that the political divisions can sometimes follow people into their communities and places of worship.
The musician said even if members of his community approached him to represent them in Parliament, he would still turn down the opportunity because he does not want to be part of the political environment.
However, Ras Kuuku said his decision not to seek political office does not mean he is not interested in civic participation.
He explained that he votes during elections because he wants to play a role in choosing a suitable leader for the country.
For Ras Kuuku, taking part in elections is important, but becoming a politician is something he does not plan to pursue.
