Paris Saint-Germain have won the UEFA Super Cup for the second year in a row after beating a determined Aston Villa side in Salzburg.
Desire Doue scored the winning goal in the 62nd minute after a VAR check confirmed that he was not offside. The result secured another trophy for the Champions League holders.
PSG took the lead in the 20th minute through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who finished with a powerful strike.
Aston Villa responded just before half-time when 17-year-old Brian Madjo scored on his debut to make it 1-1.
Madjo became the youngest player to score in the UEFA Super Cup. The England Under-17 international had already missed two good chances before he volleyed John McGinn’s cross into the net at the back post.
His appearance was also the end of an eight-month wait to play competitive football. FIFA had previously prevented Villa from registering him after his £10 million move from Metz in January.
Villa won an appeal at the start of August through the Court of Arbitration for Sport, allowing Madjo to play in competitive matches.
The young striker remained a major threat to the PSG defence, but his goal was not enough as the French side retained the trophy they won for the first time last year after beating Tottenham on penalties.
Villa, who qualified for the Super Cup after winning the Europa League in May, created several chances and forced PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov into important saves.
The defeat also means Villa manager Unai Emery has now lost all four of his UEFA Super Cup finals, having previously suffered defeats with Sevilla and Villarreal.
Somali referee Omar Artan also made history by becoming the first non-European referee to officiate the UEFA Super Cup.
