Mfantsipim School has triumphed over St. Augustine’s College and Opoku Ware School to claim back-to-back titles at Ghana’s National Science and Maths Quiz.
The Central Region-based school emerged victorious after a fierce showdown with St. Augustine’s College in the tense finale held at the University of Cape Coast auditorium on Thursday night.
After five rounds of competition, Mfantsipim scored 56 points, St. Augustine’s tallied 42 points, while Opoku Ware—widely tipped as favourites—finished third with 29 points.
This victory marks Mfantsipim’s fourth National Science and Maths Quiz title, following wins in 1999, 2014, and 2024. The school now joins Prempeh College and St. Augustine’s College, who also have four titles each. PRESEC remains the most successful school in the competition’s history with eight titles.
As part of the prize package, Mfantsipim, also known as Botwe, received GHC 70,000 ($6,500) in cash, insurance coverage for the contestants, and scholarship packages. Portions of the prize money are designated for the school, some for the contestants, and some for their trainers.
Mfantsipim edged out Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) and Mankranso SHS in the semifinals to book their spot in the final, pushing for a back-to-back win — the fourth in their history. Opoku Ware School also made it to the National Science and Maths Quiz final for the 10th time, after defeating Achimota School and St. Peter’s SHS. They were aiming for their first trophy since 2002, which was the last time they won. St. Augustine’s College (Augusco) pulled off a strong comeback in the semifinal to overcome Pope John SHS and Amaniampong SHS. With victories in 2007 and 2019, Augusco entered Thursday’s final hoping to secure their third championship. Meanwhile, the all-girls schools are still chasing their first title, even after 32 years of the competition’s history. In 2024, Mfantsipim (47 points) rallied again to claim the title ahead of St. Augustine’s College (46 points) and Keta SHTS (32 points).
