Chairman Wontumi, whose real name is Bernard Antwi Boasiako and who serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been asked to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
This comes after a firm caution from Dr. Dominic Ayine, Ghana’s Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, who stated on Friday, October 3, that Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to respond to the invitation. Dr. Ayine further revealed that the charges against the NPP Chairman have already been signed.
The investigation centres on Akonta Mining Limited, a company linked to Chairman Wontumi, which is currently under scrutiny for alleged illegal mining operations. According to the Attorney-General, progress on the case had previously been stalled due to the concealment of key documents by individuals from the previous NPP administration.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM on Sunday, October 5, Chairman Wontumi’s legal representative, Andy Appiah Kubi, confirmed that his client would cooperate fully and attend the CID meeting as scheduled. Mr. Kubi expressed surprise at the Attorney-General’s public warning, describing it as unnecessary given Chairman Wontumi’s ongoing cooperation with investigators.
“We will report to the CID headquarters in Accra at 10:00 a.m. as requested. Although we respect the invitation and will comply, I believe the warning that came with the announcement was unnecessary. We have no plans to ignore the summons,” Mr. Kubi said.
As the investigation continues, public attention remains fixed on Chairman Wontumi’s appearance and the developments that will follow in this high-profile case.
